Much like that celebrated debut, the Costa Ricans’ sophomore album is perfectly titled: truly, the sensations one finds spread across this dread landscape are an\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eAtavistic Unraveling\u003c\/i\u003e. Thankfully, ASTRIFEROUS’ foundation has changed little – the swarming morbidity of early ’90s Finnish death metal fused with classic South American madness – but there are (dread) developments that prove the band are just now hitting their stride.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite its title, \u003ci\u003eAtavistic Unraveling\u003c\/i\u003e shows ASTRIFEROUS at their tightest and sharpest, with chops and execution meeting at a nexus of impossibly horrific proportions. Duly armed, the quartet take their songwriting to strange, skronking lengths, rendering their angularity both an unsettling and utterly attacking thing.
